Prima Pearl

I've been absent for a few days getting everything settled from our move last week. We moved across the river from our old place in a neighborhood referred to as Southbank. It's a little more industrial than where we were before, with lots of office buildings, but there are still great restaurants nearby and Peter can still walk to the train that goes directly to his work, which is really nice. The building we moved into, Prima Pearl Tower, is brand new and full of amenities. Since the apartment itself isn't exactly photo-ready (aka my clothes are covering almost every square inch) I took some photos of the building to share. It's been awesome so far-our place is pretty small but it's extremely nice, and most importantly, bug free :).
The Prima Pearl is the tall skinny one in the middle. Our building (which includes levels 10-32) is done, but the "luxury" tower (levels 33-60 something) is still being completed. One is the Prima and the other is the Pearl but I can't ever remember which is which. I assume luxury in this case means the units are larger than a shoebox. Our building is nice, though, and has a helpful 24 hour concierge which is really convenient.
The workout facilities. Let's be real, I'm probably not going to spend a lot of time in here, but it looks nice!
The pool! There is also a steam room, sauna, and hottub that I didn't take pictures of because people were using them and that would be really creepy of me.
The lounge area
A community commercial kitchen, which is nice when entertaining since I assume everyone has a pretty tiny kitchen.
Large dining area with the patio/grill space in the background.
Billiard room off of the lounge. There is also a movie theater, two meeting rooms, a massage room, and a virtual golf course (Peter's favorite!), that I didn't get pictures of. I'll post pictures of our apartment as soon as it's a bit more put together, but this gives you an idea of where we live now!

More Food

We have eaten some awesome food since we've been in Melbourne. I had no idea this city had such an amazing food culture, and it's been a welcome surprise! One of my favorite new discoveries is "Avo Smash" which is avocado mixed with either cream or feta cheese to make a spread that goes over sourdough toast. It's often served with a poached egg and herbs, and is literally God's gift to the world. I had a particularity awesome Avo Smash breakfast on Sunday at brunch with some friends.

This dish included dill and parsley, which were delicious. After breakfast, we walked down Acland Street in St. Kilda, which is known for its bakeries and restaurants.
It's a very popular street!
We stopped at one of the many cake shops and I obviously got some chocolate cake.
We then walked down to the ocean, passing Luna Park on the way. It's supposed to be a kiddy amusement park, although someone would have to pay me a million dollars to get on any one of those rides.
The entrance is somewhat iconic; apparently Bachelor Australia visited Luna Park in a recent episode.

The pier at St. Kilda is getting busier as the weather warms up. We walked through the marina and admired the boats. There was one tiny row boat that was half submerged in water and was overrun with algae. It obviously had been out of commission for some time. I think that was probably the only boat in the whole place I could afford!
The city skyline from the end of the marina
Katie, Michelle, me and Sylvie!

After I got back from St. Kilda, Peter and I decided to check out the Mexican food festival that was happening in Federation Square. Melbourne isn't particularly known for its Mexican food, but there are a few really good "hipster taco bars" as Peter calls them. It might just be our new favorite restaurant category.
We got tacos at this food truck
Each taco was $6-$10. I will never get over the price of food here...
The line for Mamasita, the first "hipster taco bar" we visited in Melbourne. It's AMAZING and extremely popular. We will probably drag anyone who visits here so you can see for yourself.

We wouldn't have known about the food festival if we hadn't visited a taco bar called Touché Hombre the previous Friday. One of the bartenders, who happened to be from Iowa, told us about the festival and let us know they would have a booth. Their fish tacos were awesome and so was this fruity drink I ordered!
I've never seen so much tequila.

We are obviously enjoying the food here, and have probably gained 20 pounds, but we haven't purchased a scale and I intend to keep it that way! Today we moved into our new apartment. We are settling in and I'll take pictures when everything is set up!

New Favorite Foods

Among my greatest discoveries so far is the Australian version of Teddy Grahams. Tiny Teddy=God's gift to the world.
They're even better than Teddy Grahams because they're dipped in chocolate on one side.
I may or may not have eaten the entire box in one sitting. Because I don't want to deal with conversions (or because I like to live in denial about what I eat), I didn't bother looking at the nutrition facts. These obviously fall under the category of "health food".

My second recently-discovered favorite food is actually an old favorite: gelato. However, I just discovered the best gelato on the face of the Earth.
If you're in Melbourne, you haven't lived until you've tried The Lab Nitrogen Gelato. I had the chocolate one above, which even came with a syringe filled with chocolate syrup. It. Was. Amazing. For some reason, this place only has a 67% rating on Urban Spoon. Those people 1) are delusional or 2) lack taste buds.

Still Awkward.

In case any of my friends were wondering, turns out my awkwardness transcends continents. Weird, freak things happen to me on a daily basis that just don't happen to normal people. Not particularly BAD things, just weird things. My life in Australia, sadly, is no exception.

Last night I went out to dinner with a couple friends, all of whom I have met in the last couple weeks. (read: they don't yet understand my level of awkwardness.) So I order pizza. It looks amazing. It was amazing. Until I decided to add some Oregano. Now, Katie, to my right, had just successfully used the Oregano shaker and had no problem. That's probably because she's a normal person. So, the spices look ever so enticing and I decide to add some flair to my pizza as well. Fatal error. I start shaking, and then all of a sudden, the top flies off and I dump at least half of the bottle directly on my pizza. This is my life. It was still pretty good, albeit a little...herby.

Sunny and 68

Yesterday was almost perfect weather-wise. It was sunny with a light breeze and about 68 degrees. Sorry, I STILL fail at Celsius conversion. Peter and I walked down by the river and then sat on the grass for an hour or so soaking up the sunshine. It has quickly become apparent to us that we (especially albino me) are going to become complete tomatoes in the summer. The sun is intense. Like nothing I have ever experienced intense. Sixty eight degrees felt like 100. So, aside from being terrified about our skin melting off in the next six months, it was a beautiful day! Here's a picture I posted on Instagram:

Geelong

On Saturday I went to Geelong, a mid-sized city about an hour south of Melbourne by train, with 3 friends. It was a beautiful day and we had lots of fun exploring.
I took these pictures of the countryside on the train. Spring is definitely on the horizon. I kept my eye out for kangaroos, but sadly didn't see any!
Geelong is home to the National Wool Museum. Who knew such a thing existed? I have to admit, as lame as it sounds, I'm a bit curious about what's inside. We didn't have time to check it out, so I'll have to live in suspense until next time.
The pier!
While walking on the pier we spotted these rather large jelly fish-at least I think that's what they were. There were probably 10 of them swimming (floating?) near the surface of the water. I definitely would not want to come into contact with one of these.
We ate lunch at a cute restaurant at the end of the pier and then continued our walk along the water.
A palm tree forest!
Perks of having friends to take your picture-fewer selfies
These wooden posts were all over Geelong, decorated to look like various characters. We decided they had to be from an old pier or something. Katie (also American) and I struggled to think of the English word for these. Michelle, who is from Germany, said that there's a very specific word for the wooden posts on a dock in German. Culture lesson of the day! Anyway, these character guys were really cute and fun to take pictures with!
Here we all are next to "our" people. Basically, the one with the same/similar hair color :).
Pretty bridge that circled around the beach.

At one point near that white building at the end, two young guys stopped us and asked if we were "keen for a swim".
1) Australians use the word keen religiously but I still laugh when I hear it.
2) these guys were wearing underwear/shorts that were shorter than any shorts I have ever owned and would ever consider wearing in public. (That may be a slight exaggeration, but you get the point.)
3) it was about 60 degrees, so no, we weren't "keen" for a swim. But they complimented us on our cool American accents so that was nice!
We followed the walking path and then decided to cut across the grass to the Geelong Botanic Gardens.
Halfway through the grassy patch, it occurred to us that there could be snakes or some other horrifying Australian animal in the grass, so we jogged just to be safe. Spoiler: we all made it to the gardens alive.
Such a cute entrance to the gardens!
More garden pictures!
This is Sylvie, she's from Belgium and the bench was broken when she got there...she swears... :).

After the botanic gardens, we managed to get lost on our way downtown and ended up walking a couple miles before we realized we were going in the wrong direction. It ended up being quite a walk, and all we really wanted was ice cream. In a stroke of luck, the first shop we stumbled upon when we got back to civilization was a cute little ice cream parlor. I literally felt like we had come across the Promised Land. I ordered two scoops and realized my new friends were my kind of people when they thought that was completely normal and did the same. After all, what kind of person only gets one scoop of ice cream...?

We headed back to the city after that!
Pretty sun setting on the train ride home. Overall, Geelong was fun and worth the trip!

Friday Activities

It's Friday night, and I'm currently waiting for season one of Bachelor in Paradise to download on my iPad. I haven't watched any TV in two months, and my friend's tweets about the new bachelor show were just too enticing so I caved and purchased the season pass on iTunes for $8, which I consider a steal for the hours of entertainment it will undoubtedly provide.

Here are some pictures from the day:
Some military members were out collecting donations at the train station today. I feel like they need some tougher looking hats...these scream middle aged tourist.
Flinders Street Station and the Yarra River.
An adorable group of school kids forming an audience for this street performer. He was playing "Puff the Magic Dragon," which always makes me think of Meet the Parents.
We had dinner at a restaurant in South Yarra called Pinocchio. These are the cutest Pinocchio-inspired plates! We shared an awesome tomato pesto pepperoni pizza.
Lastly, dessert at Tutti Frutti, a frozen yogurt bar in the Emporium mall. It was delicious, and since it's technically yogurt, it doesn't really count as dessert. It's basically like eating a serving of vegetables. At least that's what I tell myself. Therefore, we stopped at Coles on the way home to pick up some wine and Oreos- a great ending to the day!
